Protect Yourself from Online Scams

Internet scams and viruses have had a recent increase across the nation. The scam starts with a pop up that may be a bright blue color, which urges the user to call their software provider because their computer has a virus. The pop up has been known to be accompanied by a loud, alarm-like noise.

Once the user calls the number, they are connected with a live operator that will try and get the user to purchase software protection services they do not need. The operator may also request access to the user's computer to "repair" the problem.

We urge customers to not give any personal or credit card information or allow remote access to your computer to an individual or company you do not know. If this happens to you, we advise you to restart the computer and call your software provider’s support center (Apple, Microsoft) directly on your own. MCTV's IT Guys are also available for virus support. Lastly, please help protect the next victim by reporting your experience to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.
