Can I Get MCTV?

Cable Modem Compatibility

A cable modem is required to use MCTV's High-Speed Internet service. MCTV provides them, at no additional cost, as part of our service.  If you choose to purchase and use your own modem instead of an MCTV provided cable modem, it is important to remember that you will be responsible for the repair, maintenance and replacement of the modem if it fails.

If you use your own modem and experience in-home problems, MCTV will not attempt to repair your modem. Instead, MCTV will provide an MCTV modem until you are able to repair or replace your own modem. You may, of course, choose to continue to use the MCTV-provided modem at no charge.

When choosing a modem three things need to be considered:

Technology

MCTV makes significant investments in our network. These investments enable MCTV to periodically upgrade Internet packages to give you more speed, but you must have the right type of modem in order to take advantage of these improvements. We know MCTV-provided modems have the capability of accepting upgrades. If you upgrade to a higher speed and need a different modem, we will provide it. If you buy a modem that is not capable of another level of service, you must either purchase a new modem or switch to an MCTV-provided modem to use that level of service.

All cable modems use a standard for hardware and software called Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). DOCSIS 3.0 is the current industry standard and works with all MCTV High-Speed Internet packages. DOCSIS 3.0 equipment will provide you with the best speed experience and allow MCTV to operate a more efficient network. All new consumer-owned modem installations must be DOCSIS 3.0. DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 are not compatible.

DOCSIS 3.0 modems with built-in WiFi are available from MCTV or from major retailers. These modems combine a cable modem, router and wireless access point in a single device. MCTV provides enhanced diagnostic service and support for MCTV-provided WiFi modems. This service is available to consumer-owned WiFi modems for the same monthly fee as MCTV-provided modems.

Modem Compatibility

It is important to make sure the modem you are buying will work with the MCTV network. MCTV’s broadband service requires a modem which may be obtained from major retailers. If you wish to use your own modem it must meet the CableLabs standards for DOCSIS 3.0 modems. MCTV has determined that the following modem types and models will not be harmful to the MCTV network:

Purchase Options

In an effort to save money, you could be tempted to purchase a used modem at a garage sale or from another person. Used modems may be older or not fully functional and could result in connection problems or slow speeds. They may also be associated with an existing MCTV account and will not function.

We encourage you to invest in equipment that will assure you get the best experience and speeds that MCTV has to offer. Purchasing a new modem protects you with a warranty and helpful advice from experts. You may buy a new modem from many major retail stores.
